First Day of Shadowing! (:

To fuel ourselves for our first day of shadowing at United Mission Hospital in Tansen, a tasty nutritious breakfast was made at the crack of dawn! Nursing students were among the first to head to the hospital to receive morning report at 7am. Nursing students were grouped into pairs, except Anneke, to shadow nursing students at the hospital on the different wards, including the medical, surgical, pediatric, and orthopedic ward!

The Pre-Med and only Pre-PA student (or as professor Sinniah likes to call us, the Preeps) played a speed round of cockroach poker before headed out to report. The “Preeps” joined the doctors, junior doctors, and Med students for morning report, then split up to shadow a doctor on each of the floors mentioned previously. There was much excitement to see firsthand the differences and similarities between medicine in Nepal and Medicine in the states!

After morning report is finished, the doctors and nurses walk to the Canteen for tea time and to enjoy the beautiful view! Morning tea time is an essential part of the hospital culture as it encourages downtime while working in a fast-paced environment. I think I speak for the group when I say tea time is my favorite part of the day and it should be implemented in the states.

After a delicious lunch, the nursing students, Professor Sinniah, and Dr. Theo did the Bagnas hike to one of the tallest points in Tansen while the Preeps headed back to the hospital to observe clinics and surgeries. They equipped themselves with bucket hats and put on their light trekking shoes to check out the beautiful views! During the hike, they enjoyed juice bought at a local shop and also enjoyed the company of the group-favorite dog, Reejus!

Medical students Lizzie and Katie joined us for dinner and gave us insights as to what it is like to be a medical student in England as well as why they wanted to become doctors! The day wrapped up with a devotional led by Anneke and more fun games. It was only the first day and there were already so many learning points as well as stories, we couldn’t have asked for a better first shadowing day!

  1. Great pictures. thanks for all the updates. How is it that this dog, Reejus is often with you. Does he travel with you too? 😄

    1. Apparently, when the students go out for a short trek up the hill, the dog who belongs to a family that lives nearby follows them. He functions as the guardian dog to the group.

  2. Love that you all are being able to see the importance of medicine and community. I love the thought of work tea time :). Glad to hear that everyone is having such an amazing time!
